The municipality of Betanzos, is located 24km south east of A Coruña in the autonomous region of Galicia, Spain.
Situated on a hill above the Mondeo and Mendo rivers the town of Betanzos, like many locales in Galicia is on a Camino route, more specifically the English Way.
The town with its mix of Gothic and Neoclassic architecture still maintains the feel of its medieval roots.. Even if you are not on a pilgrimage to Santiago it is definitely worth a visit.
Markets are held every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in the Hermanos García Naveira Square, with a typical array of clothes, shoes and other merchandise. But the focal point for me, as is true with any market I visit is always the food. Fresh local produce; eggs, cheese and an assortment of hams and cured meats. It’s always a challenge not to leave such places with more food than I could possibly eat in a week but I’ve never been one to shy away from a challenge. Even self imposed ones!
