The Lies That You Told Me

The lies that you told me
were like daggers to my heart
When did your respect for me
begin to come apart?

Who were you protecting
was it you or was it she?
This I know for sure
I really wasn’t me.

You say she has her issues
and that may well be so
When I tried to talk with you
you didn’t want to know.

You said that you’d ended it
but that was not true
Intimate phone and texting
continued with you two.

I too have played my part
in this toxic marriage game
Don’t think for just a second
that you wear all the blame.

All I ever wanted
was for you to be with me
I’d thought that’s what marriage is
not you or me but we.

I did what I felt was right for me
hoping you would share
It never panned out that way
I guess that’s why we’re here.

I felt that you still loved me
when you took me out that day
We were getting on so well
yet you chose to walk away.

You left me in a moment
trusting what we had
Then called the very person
you chose to take to bed.

All I’d ever asked
that you be honest with me
Not think it was an issue
yet here we come to be.

All that I had asked of you
was lying to me no more
Another promise broken
of this, I can be sure.

We can both get through this
sometimes a living hell
But you are not the man for me
when you lie to me so well.
